Pond Weed Control in Spring

Posted by Pond Solutions on 27th May 2014

Is your pond usually full of pond weeds?  Get a head start on reducing or eliminating their growth by applying a broad spectrum pond weed control product or herbicide, and an aquatic sun blocker in the spring.

If you have pond weeds that you want to kill, you may use a variety of aquatic herbicides on our site.  Sonar is a good product, although it can be costly, which is a broad spectrum aquatic weed killer.  Unlike other pond weed killers, Sonar acts slowly so it doesn't rob the pond of necessary oxygen when the plants start to die. (This is why it's vital to have an aerator in the pond particularly if you have fish - so you don't rob them of necessary oxygen they need to live.)  Sonar kills a large variety of pond weeds and may last more than one season.

An aquatic sun blocker is a chemical that basically dyes your pond water while blocking a certain amount of sunlight from filtering through the water.  A few products we offer are Aquashade (turquoise color), Blue/Black Vail (which comes in other colors) and Cygnet Dye.  Typically, they are added once or twice during the growing season but you have definite benefits from adding it early before things start to grow.  None of these products will kill your pond weeds but will reduce the sun light they need to grow.

As always, it's important to have a good beneficial bacteria product for your pond.  We've found PlanktoniX to be the best beneficial bacteria product out there - and we've tested a lot of them.  All of the dead weeds from using any type of aquatic weed killer or even blown in leaves, debris, dead fish, fish wastes - and anything that is organic - PlanktoniX will decompose at an accelerated rate.  So, even though you may have a good pond weed killer, you need to make sure you don't have a 'compost' of dead pond weeds on the bottom of the pond that will only serve as food for more pond weeds and unwanted algae to grow.  This compost pile will turn into muck and thick, black sludge.  (That's why you need to use PlanktoniX Pond Cleaning Bacteria (available in several sizes) and a pond aerator to break down the dead weeds, sludge and muck.)

So, if you need some Sonar, it comes in a variety of sizes.  Remember, it's a bit pricey but the application itself can last you up to 3 seasons.
