What can happen if you don't have an opening in the top of the pond during the winter?

It all becomes a number's game.  The number and size of fish you have to the amount of water in gallons and the amount of sludge buildup you may have.  Fish and other living creatures, need oxygen to live.  If the oxygen is reduced to low levels, the fish could die.  Also, the sludge at the bottom of the pond consumes oxygen and gives off hydrogen sulfide gas.  It's toxic.  If there is no exit hole for the toxic gas to escape, the fish can die.  So, do yourself a favor and get the right size of aerator for your pond.
