Spring Cleaning Your Watergarden: A Practical Guide

Posted by Pond Solutions on 7th Feb 2024

Hey watergarden enthusiasts! It's time to give your aquatic retreat a fresh start with our spring cleaning guide. Follow these simple steps to get your watergarden looking its best:

Spring is the perfect time to show your watergarden some love. After winter's chill, it's likely gathered debris and could use a refresh. Here's how to tackle the task:

  1. Clear Out Debris: Use a net to remove leaves, twigs, and debris from your watergarden. A clean pond is essential for a healthy ecosystem.
  2. Filter TLC: Check and clean or replace the filter pads in your filtration system, waterfall units, skimmers, and fountain pumps. This helps maintain clear water and a balanced environment for your aquatic plants and fish.
  3. Fish Check: If you're emptying your watergarden for cleaning, transfer your fish to aerated tubs with secure nets to keep them safe. They'll thank you for the temporary home while you spruce up their habitat. Be sure to keep your eye on them to make sure they are not suffering at any point.
  4. Pump Check: Ensure your pump is in working order. Proper circulation is key to keeping your watergarden healthy and oxygenated. We have a huge variety of pond pumps to choose from if you need a new one.
  5. Suck Up the Gunk: Use a pond vacuum to remove debris from the bottom of your watergarden. This helps maintain water quality and prevents algae growth.
  6. Plant Care: Trim and tidy up your watergarden plants, repotting them if necessary. Fertilize to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
  7. Water Treatment: Add a dechlorinator to the water to neutralize harmful chemicals and make it safe for your fish to return.
  8. Let It Flow: Switch on your pump and filtration system to circulate and oxygenate the water. This ensures a balanced ecosystem and clear water.
  9. Add Beneficial Bacteria: After the water in your water garden has recirculated for at least a few hours, if not a couple of days, and your pond fish are still okay, add a quality, fish-safe, beneficial bacteria product such as Microbe-Lift PL. This will help keep your watergarden clean and decompose fish wastes to prevent toxic ammonia from fish byproducts to build up.
  10. Fish Return: Once everything is clean and set up, reintroduce your fish to their refreshed home. Take your time to acclimate them properly.

By following these steps, your watergarden will be ready to flourish in the springtime sun. Happy cleaning!
