How to Reduce Algae and Create a Cleaner, Healthier Pond

15th Jan 2014

Did you know that algae needs two things in order to grow?  That is, sunlight and nutrients.

By robbing your pond of some of the sunlight and nutrients you can eliminate a lot of algae.  But, how do you do that?

First, you can reduce the sunlight that filters through the water by adding some of our Aquashade or Black Vail (Vail comes in different colors besides black).  Both are aquatic sunblockers that block the sun from filtering through the water and block the sunlight that unwanted algae and submersed pond weeds need.  They are aquatic dyes and can stain your hands, pants, etc. while using, so be careful.  Just add the recommended amount and you'll be all set for a couple of months.

2.  Reduce the nutrients by reducing what gets into your pond and by decomposing what's already there.  You can do this by using a pond net or skimmer which will avoid blown in debris from settling to the bottom.  Then, get yourself on a regular treatment plan of using a good beneficial bacteria such as our Microbe Lift for small ponds less than 250 square feet and our PlanktoniX bacteria product for ponds and lakes larger than 250 square feet.  The bacteria eats wastes which is what is feeding the algae and causing it to bloom besides other bad things going on in the pond.  Getting rid of the wastes is the KEY thing to keeping a healthy pond.
